It's good that we seemed to broken the home jinx of last season, says Bromley boss Mark Goldberg

BROMLEY manager Mark Goldberg says he is pleased to have six points on the board from their perfect opening week to the season.

Supporters’ have been living on a crest of a wave during the past three days because their side proudly at the top of The Skrill South table after two games.

The Ravens opened their campaign with a 2-0 victory over Hayes & Yeading United at Woking’s Kingfield Stadium last Saturday, before treating home fans to a rare 4-0 win over newly-promoted Whitehawk in midweek.

Bromley finished in fifteenth-place in the Conference South and won the London Senior Cup last season.

But Goldberg played down his side’s chances of staying near the summit as the season draws on.

He said: “It’s a good a start that we could have hoped for but we’re certainly pleased to have the points on the board early on, but we are also very aware that during the course of the season two games doesn’t mean that where we’re going to be when it comes to the end of the season, but it’s good to have the points on the board early on.”

He added: “Well, we still believe that we’ve got some very big tests ahead of us but it was a bit of a shaky first 20 minutes against Hayes & Yeading. We were a little bit nervous going in to the game, even though we’ve had such a good preparation to the season.

“But once we settled down we scored the goal at the right time and we gained confidence and composure as the game went on and we came away with a 2-0 win which we deserved at the end.”

Bromley thrashed last season’s Ryman Premier League champions Whitehawk in their first game of the season at Hayes Lane. 

Bromley’s home form over the last couple of season’s has been disappointing, but Goldberg wants to turn their home form around this season.

“We progressed further against Whitehawk,” said Goldberg.

“It’s good that we seemed to broken the jinx of last season when we were disappointing at home and we need to continue that at home this season, hopefully following it up on Saturday against Tonbridge.”

Tommy Warrilow brings his side to Hayes Lane having lost their opening two league games to Boreham Wood (0-2) and Eastbourne Borough (1-2).

The Angels are in the bottom three at this early stage but Goldberg expects a tough Kent derby.

“We’re under no illusion, they’re going to be at us very hard from the start and try to spoil our football and try to prevent us from gaining momentum,” said the Bromley boss.

“If we get a breakthrough I think we believe that we’re strong enough that we can resist and be strong in terms of not conceding too many this season.

“Hopefully with the confidence that we have in our back four and the fact that we’re working so well as a unit, if we score a goal we gain more confidence and we’ll be capable of securing another win.

“Whatever happens we’re not getting carried away. We know it’s going to be a question of winning the battle first and hopefully our football will come through.”

The last time Bromley rose to the summit was three years’ ago when they won their first seven games of the season before settling for a midtable finish.

Bromley have never finished in the top-ten in Conference South and are now in their seventh season at this level.

Goldberg said: “We’re nowhere near seven wins out of seven are we? We’re only two games!

“The thing is that we’re in a position where we have got control to a certain extent to at least have a good start to the season and that’s what we want so we’re not looking further ahead than Tonbridge and then after Tonbridge we’ll be looking at Bishop’s Stortford (away on Monday afternoon).  We’re taking one game as it comes.

“We go into every game now gaining confidence and that’s the most important thing.”

Goldberg, who has a 21-man squad at his disposal, added: “I think it’s fair to say that the boys, everybody involved has had a major impact, even the subs that have come on. We’ve got strength-in-depth that we haven’t had in recent years.

“Everybody, most importantly, is united with what we want to achieve. There’s a great camaraderie amongst the squad and we get as much support from the dug-out from the subs as we have from the players on the pitch and it’s wonderful to see.”
