It’s not impossible thinking about beating them - but we’ve got to play to our maximum, says Hayes

DOVER ATHLETIC boss Martin Hayes insists his side will take the game to Aldershot Town during the eagerly-awaited FA Cup Second Round tie on Saturday afternoon, writes Stephen McCartney.

The Kent giants will lock horns with the mid-table League Two side at a packed Crabble - and with 3,000 Dover Athletic fans filling Crabble up to the rafters, Hayes insists his heroes are ready to cause yet another FA Cup upset.

The Whites stunned Gillingham in the First Round, winning 2-0 at Priestfield Stadium, courtesy of a stunning long-range strike from Adam Birchall and Luke I’Anson to the delight of two-and-a-half thousand Dover supporters - and Hayes’ troops are ready to face the Shots in front of a SOLD-OUT passionate Crabble.

“The thing that got us joy at Gillingham was that we went and played with a tempo and had a passion and we played to a maximum,” Hayes told www.kentishfootball.co.uk.

“We’ve got to go back to starting the right way, playing the right way, attack it when we haven’t got the ball.”

But he warned: “We’re going to get punished big time against a professional side, who are performing better than Gillingham at the moment.  They’re going to cause us a lot of problems so we’ve got to be able to deal with them so I just need to educate them a little bit more where I need people to be when we haven’t got the ball and hopefully if we get a bit more organised we’ll have a chance on Saturday.”

Dover Athletic are just ONE WIN away from a potential game against the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool or Manchester United in the FA Cup Third Round.

Former Arsenal star Hayes added: “You’re in touching distance.  We’ve got a home draw, we’ve got a side who are a good side but they’re not outstanding.

“It’s not impossible thinking about beating them but we’ve got to play to our maximum.  We’ve got to not make the same kind of mistakes (we made against Woking during the 2-1 home defeat in the FA Carlsberg Trophy last weekend) without the ball but we’ve got a chance.

“We just have to focus and give it our best.”

Meanwhile, the club have appealed for supporters to turn up at Crabble at six o’clock on Saturday morning to help clear the pitch covers that were laid onto the playing surface at lunchtime today.
