It’s pleasing to start getting on the score sheet again, says James Pinnock

MARGATE manager Iain O’Connell praised James Pinnock’s performance during Saturday’s 3-3 home draw with Tooting & Mitcham United on Saturday.

The Thanet club reduced admission for the Ryman Premier League clash and despite the freezing conditions the 336 fans were rewarded with six goals.

O’Connell told www.margate-fc.com: “Fair play to Pinno, because he deserves another goal.  His first one was a great goal; he works hard the whole game; didn’t get much service second half and it’s only through him we got a point.”

But the Margate boss was disappointed that his side let a two goal lead slip and had to settle for a point in the end.

He said: “We went 3-2 down after being so comfortable at 2-0, and first half it could have been more.  Their keeper’s made some great saves.

“With the first (Tooting) goal, it looked like everyone’s head went down.

“I’ve brought back the assistant manager (John Keister) into the side today.  He’s 40 years old and he gets man-of-the-match.  Now that tells you something.”

Striker Pinnock, meanwhile, said he felt “frustrated” with the result and team performance.

He said: “We were in the driving seat at half time – 2-0 up.  That’s what we said before the game: if we get ourselves a couple of goals in front, and then we can build from there.

“For some reason – it’s psychological I think – as soon as we concede a goal I think we’re in that mind-set at the minute where we think we going to concede more, which we did.”

Pinnock bemoaned the fact that the Margate side seemed ill prepared for Tooting to up the tempo from the first whistle at the start of the second half.

Given Margate’s good first half performance, the Terrors always seemed likely to respond that way if they were to have any chance of getting back in the game.

Looking at his own personal performance, he said: “I like to think there’s more to my game than goal scorer. I’m not an out and out goal scorer although obviously playing as a centre forward you’re judged on goals.

“It’s pleasing to start getting on the score sheet again, but it’s just so frustrating when you’re scoring and you’re not winning.

“Being 2-0 up, (although) we drew in the end, it feels like a defeat really.

“We’ve got to look at our first half performance and build on that and try and look at the positives in the game and we’ve all got to stick together.”
