It's really good to see Greenwich Boro' back to where they should be, says rival boss Tony Russell

ERITH TOWN manager Tony Russell says he has a soft-spot for Saturday’s Kent Senior Trophy opponents Greenwich Borough, writes Stephen McCartney.

The 32-year-old rookie manager guided his club into second place in the Safety Net Associates Kent League table with a 4-3 win at Tunbridge Wells on Bank Holiday Monday.

The Dockers were 3-1 down with only sixteen minutes to go, but staged a remarkable comeback with goals from Chris Walker, Malik Fofanna (his second of the game after opening the scoring after four minutes) and Joe Foster grabbing the points at Culverden Stadium.

Russell takes his side to Oakley Road to lock horns with Steve Firkins’ side, one that has the best defensive record in the Kent League having conceded only 10 goals in 11 games and are sitting in sixth place in the table, a fine feat considering Greenwich Borough are the worst supported club in the division with average gates of just 24.

But Russell remembers what it was like at Borough’s former ground, the modest Harrow Meadow at Eltham.

“I’ve got an affiliation with Greenwich Borough, my uncle (Martin Dillnut) was the chairman for years,” revealed the former Thamesmead Town coach.

“When I was a boy, I used to go down and watch them.  I’ve got an affiliation with Greenwich Borough and it’s really good to see them back up there.  It went through a few years when it was back down the bottom and it wasn’t very good but it’s good to see the boys playing good football and the club’s back to where it should be.

“It’s a game I’m looking forward to and it’s a club that means a lot to me because I played for them when I was sixteen.”
