It wasn't easy to leave Greenwich - but I need a new challenge, says new Fisher boss Steve Firkins
Friday 20th May 2011
Fisher are delighted to confirm the appointment of Steve Firkins as their new manager this morning.
Firkins will join the club fresh from leading Greenwich Borough to fourth place in the Kent League Premier last year and has a wealth of experience in both coaching and management roles.
His most notable achievement in the game was to take Greenwich Borough to the 2009/10 Kent Senior Trophy final, where they narrowly lost out to Faversham Town 2-1. He also took Greenwich to third place in the Kent League Premier in his first season at the club in 2008-09.
He was also Greenwich Borough's secretary.
Ahead of being officially unveiled later this month, Firkins told www.fisherfc.co.uk: “I am proud and honoured to be the manager of Fisher FC. It will be an exciting challenge and I am determined to do my very best for the club.
“This is a fantastic club which is well supported in this league with a history that is very much respected in non-league football.
“It wasn’t easy to leave Greenwich as I’ve had three fantastic years there and the people around the club were great to me. I just feel as though I had given my all and taken them as far as I can.
“I need a new challenge now and I feel that this is the perfect opportunity for me to take my career that one step further.
“I’m a Bermondsey boy and live only a short walk from the old Surrey Docks Stadium where I used to go and watch Fisher years ago. I’m just determined to improve on the club’s recent league positions and help make Fisher a club that Bermondsey can be proud of once again.
“I’m looking forward to getting to work with the existing players here as I’m aware they’re a very young but talented bunch although I’ll of course be looking to bring in a few fresh faces too.
“I’d like to kick things off early July and already I’m starting to think about our preparations for pre-season.”
He has been welcomed to the club by the club’s directors, with all looking forward to a busy summer and 2010-11 season ahead for the club.
Ben Westmancott said: “I am delighted to welcome Steve to Fisher and am confident he will prove a success. We have taken our time over this appointment and are confident we have picked the right man.
“We are all looking forward to next season with some new players coming in and Steve’s arrival is a reason for real optimism in 2011-12.”
Jude Bliss said: “I have to say that having met Steve and spent some time talking with him I’m confident we have made the right choice.
“We needed experience and stability and quite frankly his reputation speaks for itself. What he has achieved at Greenwich is nothing short of remarkable.
"He is also someone who understands who we are as a club and what we are trying to build here and he is very supportive of our vision of progressing the club in a steady and sustainable way.
"He’s down-to-earth, easy to get on with and I am sure the players and supporters will relate well to him.”
