I've had an awful record in the Trophy and I hope to put it right, says Bromley boss Mark Goldberg

Wednesday 21st November 2012

BROMLEY boss Mark Goldberg says he wants his new signing Louie Theophanous to end his side’s profligacy in front of goal.

Goldberg unveiled the arrival of the 21-year-old striker from Staines Town after being impressed during the three times that he has played against his side this season.

Theophanous, who is a body double for Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo, will be cup-tied for Saturday’s FA Carlsberg Trophy home tie against highflying Boreham Wood on Saturday, but Goldberg wants the former AFC Wimbledon reserve team striker to end the Kent club’s poor form in front of goal.

Bromley languish in the bottom four in the Blue Square Bet (Conference) South table, with 16 points (four wins and four draws) from fourteen league games.

Defensively, with Joe Welch in goal, and a regular back four of Marlon Patterson, Liam Harwood, Moses Swaibu and Sanchez Ming, the Ravens have conceded eighteen goals, but at the other end they have scored only fifteen league goals.

Goldberg hopes Theophanous continues his prolific vein of form, after scoring nine goals for Staines Town this season.

“When we played against Staines he was one of a few players over the years that I feared immediately when he got on the ball,” admitted Goldberg, following his side’s 3-1 home win over Gillingham’s development side in the Kent Senior Cup (Sponsored by Portablefloodlights.com) last night.

“His movement of the ball and his ability on the ball excited me and also made me extremely fearful as a manager and when that happens in the past I’ve often said to my co-management team those are the players who we should target for the future.

“The opportunity came to take him or shall I say I created an opportunity to encourage him to come from Staines to Bromley and I’m delighted to say he accepted.

“We’re excited with him coming in and hopefully he’ll score goals for us the way he scored for Staines and he scored for AFC Wimbledon’s reserves, 38 goals in one season in reserve football and I’ve seen a lot of reserve football and he’s got an exceptional track record so we’re very hopeful that we can encourage and be helpful to Louie to get his goal tally up for Bromley as he has done for Staines this season.”

Goldberg revealed he will show one player the exit in order to balance the books at Hayes Lane.

He said: “There’s going to be a couple of changes. One more player in and one player out. We have to balance the books and we’ll be doing that this week.”

Boreham Wood arrive in Kent sitting in third-place in the Blue Square Bet (Conference) South table and Goldberg wants to improve on his miserable FA Trophy record.

Despite guiding the club to the FA Cup First Round on four occasions during the past six years – although going out to Gillingham, Colchester United, Leyton Orient and Fleetwood Town – Bromley’s Third Qualifying Round Replay win away to Staines Town was the club’s first FA Trophy win since 2007.

“It’s going to be a very tough game,” warned Goldberg.

“We’re just going to shake things up a little bit from last Saturday and we hope to be in a much stronger position to get a result on Saturday than we were last Saturday.”

Jay May scored the only goal of the game in Billericay Town’s league win at Hayes Lane last weekend.

“Louie’s cup-tied but there might be one or two other changes for Saturday,” added Goldberg.

“I’ve had an awful record in the Trophy and I hope to put this right this year.  The Trophy is a realistic opportunity for us where the FA Cup is good for us until the first round. One day we’ll look to beat our record there.

“We’ll concentrate on Boreham Wood now. We’ve watched a couple of their games. We know what to expect.  They’re going to be the strongest opposition, certainly the top three of opposition that we’ve played this season. We’re in for a tough game.”

Bromley return to Conference South action with a trip to Havant & Waterlooville on Saturday 1 December.

Goldberg said: “We’ve just got to make sure that we take advantage of our games in hand. We’ve got the confidence.  We’re certainly doing something about the lack of goalscoring.  Goals conceded is quite an impressive record this season.  Goals for is a very poor record and our job is to put that right.  If we put that right then we can still have a good run this year.”

When asked about the injury front, the Bromley boss replied, “Elliott Buchanan is hopefully back on Saturday. I think it’s very unlikely that we’re going to see anything from the two long-term injuries (Warren McBean and Albert Jarrett) until maybe right until the end of the season.”
