I want a massive reaction from my players, insists Darts boss Tony Burman

DARTFORD boss Tony Burman says he is looking for a reaction from his side for their FA Cup Third Qualifying Round clash at Canvey Island on Saturday, writes Stephen McCartney.

The Darts travelled to basement side Boreham Wood last Saturday and were on the back of a 3-1 defeat, which was the Hertfordshire side’s first league win of the season.

Burman then fielded a strong side for Monday night’s home friendly against Dulwich Hamlet, which resulted in a single goal victory, courtesy of striker Carl Rook.

“Surprise? In your opinion, yes, but unfortunately the league we’re in, whether they’re at the bottom or not, they’re a good side.  They’ve signed a few players but it was a very disappointing performance from the players and they know that!” Burman told www.kentishfootball.co.uk.

“We’ve got to move on, which we had a little friendly on Monday evening to give them a game, where all the cobwebs have been removed and we can now look forward now to the Canvey game.

“We had a poor game on Saturday and the majority of the players played in the game on Monday night.  We had a good chat on Monday night and some positives came out of it instead of training and I gave one or two other players 90 minutes who haven’t had a chance to get 90 minutes to the positives on that was good.”

Looking forward to the trip to Canvey Island, with a place in the final qualifying round of the FA Cup up for grabs, Burman warned: “Obviously it’s going to be a difficult game but we know Canvey from the last few seasons.  We had some good battles with them and fortunately for us the majority of the time we’ve come out ok with it.

“We want to stay in the FA Cup for as long as we can,” added Burman.  “We’ve got a difficult tie against Canvey away from home and we’ll endeavour to progress in that.

“I want a massive reaction from the players this weekend and I’m sure I will get that and hopefully we can progress and be in the hat on Monday morning.”

Canvey Island sit in tenth place in the Ryman Premier League table with a record of three wins and four draws from their 10 league outings.

Dartford, on the other hand, sit one division higher, sixth-from-bottom (or seventeenth) in their first Blue Square Bet South campaign, with a record of two wins and four draws.

Reflecting on his side’s first ten league games, Burman said: “Well, my first nine games were very good and they were reasonably good I should say.

“We put in a real poor performance against Boreham Wood and it knocked us back further with the points tally.

“I feel we have been very unfortunate now to have 10 points from the first nine games. We didn’t deserve nothing against Boreham Wood, but the points tally doesn’t lie and at the moment I was expecting a lot more points than what we’ve got.”

Lee Burns, meanwhile, is still doubtful with a back injury; Lee Noble still has a slight ankle injury; Billy Burgess and Ollie Berquez are roughly a week away from returning from injury.
