I want to achive big things at Maidstone United, says goalkeeper Lee Worgan

GOALKEEPER Lee Worgan has joined Maidstone United after five years with Tonbridge Angels.

After announcing his departure from Longmead Stadium at the weekend, Worgan was linked with Maidstone United and Jay Saunders has pulled off one of his biggest signings to date with this vastly-experienced shot stopper.

Worgan, 29, who came through the youth ranks at Wimbledon, made more than 150 appearances for the Angels and was vital to their promotion to Conference South at the end of the 2010/11 season.

Worgan told www.maidstoneunited.co.uk: “I am delighted to be joining and relishing the opportunity next season. It’s a massive club and the infrastructure is here with the academy and the stadium and I cannot wait to get going now.

“I am coming here with the ambition to win the league or win promotion through the play-offs. I want to achieve big things and take my career on here.”

Stones boss Saunders added: “This is a quality signing for the club. Lee has a proven track record and, at 29 years of age, his best years are still ahead of him. He’s seen what the club have achieved this season and was really keen to be part of it – even taking a pay cut to come here. These initial signings show our intent – we’re not just there to make up the numbers, we want to challenge and push for promotion again.”

Saunders was delighted to retain the services of defender Steve Watt.

Watt joined the club on-loan from Conference South side Dover Athletic in February before a permanent move in March.  His commanding defensive performances made him a favourite among the Maidstone faithful and earned him the team captaincy for the final few matches of the promotion winning campaign.

Watt said: “I see this club going places and I want to be part of that future going forward.  I am glad to get everything sorted and really looking forward to the start of next season.”

Saunders added: “I am delighted to get Steve on board and he’ll be a big asset to us for the Ryman Premier Division campaign.”
