I will continue as first team manager, says Lewisham Borough chairman Ray Simpson

Tuesday 07th January 2014
LEWISHAM BOROUGH chairman Ray Simpson has explained why he will continue to be in charge of team affairs for the rest of the season.

Simpson took charge of team affairs alongside vice-chairman George Davis after boss Willie O’Sullivan was relieved of his duties on 14 December after the club went down to a 1-0 home defeat to Rusthall.

But despite suffering a humiliating 5-0 home defeat to local rivals Bridon Ropes in his first game in charge, Simpson insists the club will not make any further changes until the summer.

“Following a series of recent interviews Lewisham Borough (Community) FC have decided not to make a new appointment at this stage of the season,” said Mr Simpson.

“We believe it would be best for all parties concerned to start afresh with a clean slate and to ensure that the club is where we want it to be before we bring in anyone new.

“There were many good candidates who could probably do a good job but we felt that more disruption at this stage of the season would not be a good idea.

“The response we have had was overwhelming and flattering considering we did not even advertise for the position and I thank everyone for their kind words and interest.

“The club have CV’s from a number of interested parties who have asked to still be considered at the end of the season.

“I will continue as first team manager with George Davis (assistant), Marc Bentz (head coach) and Richard Leach as physio.”

Lewisham Borough go into the New Year sitting in 12
th
place (bottom four) in the Kent Invicta League with a record of four wins and a draw from their fourteen league games.

They travel to Charlton to play Meridian VP in the Pain & Glory Sports Kent Invicta League Challenge Trophy Second Round First Leg on Saturday (2:00pm).

The two sides met at the Ladywell Arena on a Wednesday night back in September, with the home club coming out on top in a 3-2 victory.

But Lewisham Borough go into the game on the back of four defeats on the bounce, without finding the back of the net.
