Jenkins wants Cup cash to strengthen his team

CRAY WANDERERS boss Ian Jenkins is confident his side can cause an upset and knock out higher-league Sutton United in the first qualifying round of the FA Cup on Saturday, writes Stephen McCartney.

The Wands climbed up to fourth in the Ryman League Division One South table with a comfortable 2-0 win over struggling Kent rivals Whitstable Town last night.

Striker Tony Atkins opened the scoring after 25 minutes with his first goal of the season before defender Steve Aris headed home a second five minutes into the second half.

The win maintains the club’s 100% home record, having beaten Godalming Town and Merstham already and don’t forget their 4-1 win over Chichester City United in the preliminary round of the FA Cup.

Jenkins, speaking to www.kentishfootball.co.uk, believes his side will raise their game against a Sutton United side that’s desperate to clinch promotion out of the Ryman Premier League following their relegation last term.

“We’ve said before, when we go to play teams that are higher than us we perform anyway in the Cup,” he said.

“It would be nice to go on a little run in the Cup. It will be nice to go to a lovely stadium and a decent pitch and play a team higher than us.

“It’s a massive game, there’s a lot of money involved in it this year as well. If we can go through two more rounds it would be financially brilliant for us. I could go to the boss (chairman Gary Hillman) and ask for a bit more money, which would be nice.”
