Keeping Folkestone up this season will be my best achivement to date, says Neil Cugley
Former Horsham striker Simon Austin and midfielder Darren Smith both scored two goals during last Saturday’s FA Cup First Qualifying Round tie at Cheriton Road, which saw the Kent side win the tie 4-2.
Horsham are rooted to the foot of the Ryman Premier League table, having picked up only one point from their opening six games, and with his side just four positions higher, Cugley is expecting a tough game at Gorings Mead.
“I would have thought they’d be not very happy, they’ll be right into us on Saturday,” warned Cugley, who was speaking to www.kentishfootball.co.uk.
"To be fair to Horsham, they do play open football so you will get chances and I’m sure it will be an open game – so it will be 0-0!”
But these are the kind of games that Folkestone Invicta must win to avoid dropping back down to Ryman League Division One after clinching promotion via the play-off’s.
“It will be a long, old slog for us and we knew that when we came into the league,” said Cugley.
“We’d love to get enough points to stay up. I think that will be, still if I’m being honest, maybe my best achievement to date really if I can keep this side up this year, with how things are financially.
“We’ve got a small squad, it’s good having some good days and getting promotion, but if I can keep this team up, I think I’d be very, very proud.”
Three points will be very rewarding for Folkestone in what can be described at this early stage of the season as a six-pointer.
Cugley added: “I don’t think we’ll get loads of back-to-back wins so again, we’ve got to enjoy them when we get them!”
