Keister returns to Margate

JOHN KEISTER is leaving Dover Athletic this week to re-join neighbours Margate, writes Justin Allen.

The popular midfield star - who has also been covering in defence - has been a model professional during his time with the Whites.

Known affectionately as The Assassin, Keister has been a key player in the club's back-to-back promotions from the Ryman League Division One to Blue Square South.

But he has been restricted to a handful of starts this term, and Margate are willing to offer him first-team football.

And Dover boss Andy Hessenthaler, speaking to www.doverathletic.com today admitted: "I'm very sorry to see him go. John has been a smashing player for us. His experience on and off the field has been a huge help - and he's a professional of the highest order.

"But he appreciated that with the talent we've got in the squad now that he might not get as many games - and of course John wants to play, especially now at his age.

"So Margate have come in and asked if he is available - and we've let him talk to them and he's decided he'd like to go there after having a chat with me.

"I think everyone here will wish him all the very best and thank him for his services to the club - because, as I say, he's been a model professional for Dover Athletic."

Hessenthaler revealed that the playing budget also needed a trim to allow the possibility of bringing in another midfielder to the club at a future date.

He said: "We've identified a midfielder we'd like to sign. It can't happen at this exact moment but we did need to trim the budget."

Hessenthaler has asked chairman Jim Parmenter if it would be possible to arrange a benefit game for JK at the end of the season.

He said: "I think he deserves that after what he's done for the club. Hopefully, we'll be able to sort something out."

Keister will be at the game at Thurrock tonight to bid farewell to the players.
