Kent League Christmas programme suffers from The Big Freeze
Friday 24th December 2010
TWO Kent League clubs have missed out on lucrative games over the festive period as the cold snap continues to bite, writes Stephen McCartney.
There was just one Kent League game scheduled for Boxing Day, but Erith & Belvedere’s clash with Beckenham Town was postponed by referee Tim Burman on Christmas Eve.
Erith & Belvedere club secretary, Frank May, told www.kentishfootball.co.uk: “With the pitch at Park View Road frozen and with no significant improvement in temperatures predicted, referee Mr Burman has postponed the fixture.”
Sevenoaks Town, meanwhile, have made an early decision to call off Monday’s lucrative Kent League local derby against Tunbridge Wells, due to similar conditions at Greatness Park.
A club statement issued on www.sevenoakstownfc.org, said: "Following a pitch inspection this morning and the forecast of continued freezing weather over Christmas, the club has made a decision to postpone the above fixture.
"There is still a large covering of snow on the pitch which is also frozen underneath, and despite our best efforts, burst pipes means we have no water in one dressing room or our kitchen/tea bar.
"There is the added problem of a snow/ice covered car park which we feel is a health & safety issue as it resembles an ice rink.
"Sevenoaks Town thanks you for your understanding on this decision and wishes everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year."
The Kent League scheduled only four games for the festive period, with the other two scheduled for next Bank Holiday Tuesday with Hythe Town and Norton Sports hosting Lordswood and Herne Bay respectively.
Not one of the sixteen sides in the division have reached the half-way stage of their league campaigns, and Tunbridge Wells and Erith & Belvedere have played only nine of their 30 league games.
Holmesdale lead the way with fourteen games played, with Herne Bay, Erith Town, Fisher and Sporting Bengal, following on 13.
Clubs and managers have been concerned with a lack of midweek fixtures earlier on the in the season when the weather was much better and they all face a fixture pile-up between now and the end of the season.
Meanwhile, www.kentishfootball.co.uk would like to wish all our Kent clubs, players, managers and supporters a Merry Christmas and a Happy and Successful 2011.
