Kent League title dual: We must treat Wells with respect, insists Huggins - EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

Leroy Huggins, described as a “revelation” by his caretaker manager Dean Frost, has added to the mind games by warning title rivals Whitstable Town that they could still slip up during the last seven days of the season, writes Stephen McCartney.

The much-travelled striker, who doesn’t like revealing his age, scored both VCD Athletic’s goals to gate-crash Whitstable Town’s promotion party during their 2-1 win yesterday.

The Oystermen needed to win their last home match of the season, and a crowd of 450 flocked through the turnstiles at The Belmont, to see them clinch promotion into the Ryman League for the very first time.

But Huggins had other ideas, scoring from two Mark Greatorex crosses, as third placed Vickers have given themselves a great chance of winning their first ever Kent League crown themselves.

Whitstable travel to Sevenoaks Town on Tuesday night before Vickers travel to second-from-bottom side Tunbridge Wells 24 hours later.

And just 12 months ago when Maidstone United pipped long-term leaders Beckenham Town to the title on the last day of the season, Vickers will be hoping to do the same next Saturday.

Vickers welcome Deal Town to the Oakwood, whilst the league leaders, who have lost their four league games during their last seven outings, travel to Thamesmead Town.

“Whether they win, whether they lose really, we just have to concentrate on what we’ve got to do and that’s go to Tunbridge (Wells) and get a result basically,” Huggins said EXCLUSIVELY to www.kentishfootball.co.uk yesterday.

“We want them to slip up somewhere down the line but it’s all about us. If we worry too much about them, then our game is in jeopardy, so we’ve got to do all we can to get the points under our belt.”

But the striker, who started his career with Crockenhill, was delighted that he was the man that put the champagne back on ice.

“We won the game and it’s a great result for us,” he said. “That’s what we come here to do and I think we deserved it.

“I think we worked hard, we preserved with it, and it’s obviously paid off for us.”

“It is close and we have only two games left, but if it doesn’t work for us this season, I’m sure we’ll come back better and stronger next season.

“But we’re in the title race still, anything can happen as people know and hopefully it does go our way, but we just have to wait and see.”

Huggins warned that Tunbridge Wells won’t roll over and die at Culverden Stadium on Wednesday night.

“I wouldn’t say we should win because Tunbridge (Wells), they’re a good side,” he said. “It’s not going to be no walk-over as people may think.

“They’re going to give it their all, we’re going to give it our all, and hopefully come out with a good result, but nothing’s going to be easy.”
