Kent sides just two wins away from potential trip to giants Leeds United

DOVER ATHLETIC could be in for a lucrative pay day in the third qualifying round of the FA Cup on 11th October, writes Stephen McCartney.

The Ryman Premier League leaders will host Blue Square South club AFC Wimbledon at Perrys Crabble that day - if Terry Brown’s men can see off Bedford Town in their second qualifying round replay at Kingsmeadow tomorrow night.

A crowd of over 4,000 will be expected at Perrys Crabble if the south-west Londoners see off their British Gas Business Premier League opponents.

The prospect of both club’s locking horns has already whetted the appetite of both managers.

But Brown, whose side were held to a 2-2 away draw, knows his side must dispose off a Bedford Town side that are third in their league and will be no pushovers.

“The draw hasn’t been kind to Bedford or us with a very difficult tie away to Dover Athletic,” Brown told www.afcwimbledon.co.uk.

“If we are fortunate to get through on Tuesday we will have the opportunity to watch our opponents at Carshalton this coming Saturday.

“Any decent cup run always starts off with one or two difficult ties and if we wish to have a crack at one of the big boys we will certainly have to earn the right at Dover.”

With AFC Wimbledon having a strong Kent fan-base, Dover Athletic boss Hessenthaler wants Bedford Town to lose tomorrow night.

“AFC will be the one because it really will test us and financially it’ll be very good for the club,” Hessenthaler told BBC Radio Kent earlier today.

“Most of my players will be and I look forward to it when it comes around.

“They’ve got a fantastic following, as we have, so it’ll be an interesting tie.”

Meanwhile, Maidstone United face a long trip to play Halesowen Town for the very first time.

Halesowen are currently fifth place in the same division as Bedford Town, and Stones joint-manager Alan Walker is relishing the clash against the Yeltz.

“It’s not the easiest of games but it’s all down to us,” Walker told www.maidstoneunited.co.uk.

“We’ve got to go out there and do our best. We’ll have them watched and see what we’ll be up against.

“They are in an equivalent league to us and judging by their position in the table have had a similar start.

“At some stage we’ve got to beat these kind of teams if we are to progress in the competition.

“We’ll do our homework and hopefully our supporters will enjoy a day out and get behind the team.”

Two other Kent sides must win replay’s if they’re to join Dover and Maidstone in the penultimate qualifying round.

Thamesmead Town will travel to Ryman Premier League side AFC Hornchurch if they defeat Ryman One South side Merstham at Bayliss Avenue on Wednesday night.

The Urchins knocked out Blue Square South side Bromley at Hayes Lane on Saturday, courtesy of Mark Janney’s first half penalty.

The Essex side had their goalkeeper Dale Brightly sent off for handling outside the area and Elliot Styles took the gloves and made some magnificent saves.

Blue Square South side Welling United will travel to their league rivals, Hampton & Richmond Borough in the next round - if Andy Ford’s men win Wednesday night’s replay at Ryman One South side Whyteleafe - a game being covered by www.kentishfootball.co.uk.

The Beavers completed a smash-and-grab raid by winning at Dartford on Saturday. Barrie Matthews stealing victory with a 43rd minute with a header, despite the Kent side dominating throughout.

Meanwhile, Ebbsfleet United start their FA Cup campaign in the fourth - and final - qualifying round two weeks later.
