Kent title chasers' have all to play for
SITTINGBOURNE boss Gary Abbott says the race for the Ryman League Division One South title is all to play for, writes Stephen McCartney.
The Bourne Park outfit climbed back into the play-off zone with a 3-1 victory at Chipstead last weekend, and welcome the league leaders on Saturday.
Cray Wanderers, who have won their last six league games, arrive at Bourne Park with a six-point lead over wobbling Kingstonian, although the Surrey giants have three games in hand.
The K’s 1-0 home defeat to lowly Corinthian-Casuals stunned the two Kent sides that are both in the top five and Abbott, speaking to BBC Radio Kent following his side’s win at High Road, says no-one should rule out his side, especially as they have lost just once in their last fifteen games.
“It’s all to play for!” said Abbott. “We’ve come (to Chipstead) and got three points, which is what we wanted to do and we’ve got them, so we’re pleased.
“You can look at one of five teams who are going to be up there who obviously want to win it and we’re one of them. We’re trying to go and win it.
“It makes the game against Cray even bigger for us, bigger for both of us really, so we’re going to look to get three points sand we still have two games in hand as well, so at the moment it’s all good.”
Meanwhile, Cray Wanderers’ assistant manager Joe Francis, expects a tough game against a friend who is doing extremely well at cash-strapped Sittingbourne.
“We’ve got to go to Sittingbourne and Gary’s done ever so well there,” Francis told BBC Radio Kent last weekend, following his side’s comfortable 3-1 win at Folkestone Invicta.
“That will always be a tough game. I played with Gary fifteen years ago at Welling and he’s a good mate and he’s done a fantastic job over at Sittingbourne and they’re very, very difficult to beat.
“We go there, we’ve got to go to Fleet and right on bank holiday Monday, two games before the end of the season, we’ve got to go to Kingstonian, so plenty of big games to come.”
