Lessons have been learnt, says Beckenham chairman

Monday 25th January 2010
BECKENHAM TOWN chairman Chris McCarthy has told manager Jason Huntley to keep the club’s season alive tonight, writes Stephen McCartney.

Beckenham travel to Erith Town, with a 2-0 first leg lead in the quarter-finals of the Bulmers Cider Kent League Cup, courtesy of late goals from Gary Gorman and Anthony Weir in the first leg at Eden Park Avenue six days ago.

They are currently sitting in fifth place in the Bulmers Cider Kent League table with seven wins and two draws from their 14 league outings and are way off the pace when it comes to winning the title, fifteen points behind league leaders Faversham Town, although they do have a couple games in hand.

The Eden Park Avenue outfit were also knocked out of the FA Vase by Essex side Tiptree United in the third round and Holmesdale beat them on penalties in the second round to end their progress in the Kent Senior Trophy.

“Seven weeks ago we were still in the Vase, Kent Senior, League Cup and doing ok in the league,” Mr McCarthy told www.kentishfootball.co.uk ahead of their trip to Erith Stadium.

“Now seven weeks on we only have the League Cup to focus on in reality!

“The lesson learnt is that you need a bigger squad to cover loss of form, injuries and suspensions.

“Jason has a full squad tonight for the first time in eight weeks, so I’d expect us to put on a good performance and get a semi-final place.”

Beckenham are still involved in the London Senior Cup and travel to Ryman Premier League side Harrow Borough next Tuesday night.

Meanwhile, Erith Town's officials have confirmed that this game will kick-off at 7:30pm.
