Lewisham Borough unveil Billy Piper as their new manager

Monday 28th November 2011
LEWISHAM BOROUGH chief executive Ray Simpson has explained why he has named a new five-man management team to replace coach Darrell Queeley, writes Stephen McCartney.

Queeley, 32, parted company with the Kent Invicta League club on 17 November, just three days after guiding the club to a 2-1 victory over Kent Hurlimann Football League side Erith Town in the London Senior Cup.

Mr Simpson today revealed that Billy Piper (manager), Scott Ellis (head coach), Derek Oldfield (coach), Tony Knight (goalkeeping coach) and Denton Swearing (scout), took charge of the team for their impressive 4-0 win away to Seven Acre & Sidcup on 19 November but reality quickly set in as they were defeated 2-1 at home to Phoenix Sports at the weekend, conceding a goal in the last minute.

“Lewisham Borough (Community) Football Club decided to part company with coach Darrell Queeley largely due to league results where they had not won a match since 17 September 2011,” explained Mr Simpson.

“This was an extremely tough decision to take especially following a good result in the London Senior Cup against Erith Town.

“Darrell was very popular at the club amongst staff and players.  However, he was trying in very difficult circumstances to keep things going on his own and consequently many things had started to go wrong several weeks ago in terms of results and discipline.

“We do wish Darrell well for the future and have no doubt that he will secure another job at this level or higher very soon.”

New manager Piper is a young ambitious manager with a very experienced team behind him.  Last year they won the South London Alliance Premier Division title with FC Hollington by 18 points without losing a match.

Mr Simpson said: “This is their first job in senior team management but one they are relishing.  There were a number of clubs looking at them at this level and higher but we managed to secure their services as we felt they matched the club’s ambitions.

“They have good access to players and are keen to involve many of the Academy team in the first team squad.

“I wish to thank the many applicants who applied for the job which we believe provides an excellent opportunity in managing a senior football team with ambition in these difficult teams.”

Lewisham Borough travel to Ryman League Division One South outfit Corinthian-Casuals in the Fourth Round of the London Senior Cup on Tuesday night.

“We are confident they (the new management team) can produce an upset on the road again as in the previous two rounds,” added Mr Simpson.
