Lewis: We'll get used to one another
Sunday 23rd August 2009
MARGATE defender Ben Lewis says his team-mates are confident going into Monday’s night’s clash with newly-promoted side Aveley, writes Stephen McCartney.
Terry Yorath’s men were rooted to the foot of the Ryman Premier League table following two successive
4-0 thrashings on the hands of both Sutton United and Dartford, but yesterday’s 2-1 home win over Boreham Wood ensures the Blues travel to Essex with some confidence.
Joe Healy, who is wanted by his former club Beckenham Town, had levelled for Margate, before substitute, Billy Dunn - who is on loan from Sutton United - grabbed Margate’s first points of the season deep into injury time.
“It’s been tough, but we haven’t performed well as a team,” admitted Lewis, when speaking in an audio interview with www.margate-fc.com.
“There’s loads of excuses about a lot of us are still getting to know each other, and we’ve brought in a few more lads today.
“You’ve got to say we haven’t started well. We’ve nicked a win today, three games, three points.
“If you look, you’d probably be happy with two points from the first 2 games, so if we win Monday, then we’re probably not too far away from where we’d would’ve been or wanted to be after four games.”
Chelmsford-based Lewis, meanwhile, wants to take maximum points from an unbeaten Aveley side that have collected seven points from their opening three games, since winning the Ryman League Division One North title last season, and as a result are behind Dartford and Carshalton Athletic in the table.
“We’re going into it with confidence now we’ve got two of the toughest teams out the way,” said the former Maidstone United central defender.
“I don’t know much about them (it’s quite close to where I live), but we’re going there looking for a win and six points out of four games isn’t that bad really.”
Lewis has been told by Yorath to offer his experience to his fellow defenders at Hartsdown Park.
“It’s been difficult really, although I’ve been the experienced talker, the lads here are very young and sometimes you find you’re trying to do their game rather than doing your own as well,” said Lewis.
“Saying that, me and the gaffer were speaking a minute ago, it’s hard but that’s why they brought me here really.
“We’ll all get used to each other and what we’re doing, we’ll get better,”
