Maidstone United sign Shaun Welford for an undisclosed fee from Margate

Thursday 14th July 2011
MAIDSTONE UNITED player-manager Jay Saunders has today unveiled the signing of target man Shaun Welford for an undisclosed fee from Margate.

After a period of protracted negotiations, Saunders was delighted to have finalised the deal with yet another locally based player.

“I’ve known Shaun for a long time and he is exactly what I was looking for to play up front for us this season,” Saunders told www.maidstoneunited.co.uk.

“He will give the front line a focal point and with Alex Flisher and Ellis Green playing out wide, the supply line for Shaun and James Pinnock will hopefully prove to be fruitful for us.”

Welford has previously played for Corinthian, Ramsgate and Dover Athletic as well as Margate.

Welford joins up with former Margate team mates Saunders, Tommy Osborne, Pinnock and Alex Waugh at Maidstone United.

Last season he scored 12 times for the Hartsdown Park outfit in 40 games.  This included a goal in the Stones 2-0 reverse to Margate at Homelands and a hat-trick in the FA Trophy against Maidstone United’s opponents of the new league season, Whitehawk.

Welford’s addition to the squad has also been supplemented by the signatures of Colin Richmond and Steve Brading, 19, earlier this week.

Richmond had no hesitation in continuing his spell at the club, having arrived from Sittingbourne last summer, and re-signed for the Stones immediately upon his return from holiday.

Teenager Brading is a Larkfield lad and is yet another player to successfully graduate from the club’s youth and reserve structure.

The Stones begin their pre-season campaign at Kent Invicta League side Bearsted, who are managed by Tony Cornwelll, on Saturday.
