Marcus Cassisus issues Bromley boss Mark Goldberg a gentle reminder of his goalscoring prowess

MARCUS CASSIUS hopes his goalscoring form in the Kent League for Erith & Belvedere will be noticed by Bromley manager Mark Goldberg, writes Stephen McCartney.

Micky Collins, 39, the new Erith & Belvedere manager, has secured the nippy 20-year-old striker on loan from the Blue Square Bet South outfit, and Cassius got his season off to a great start by scoring the two goals that helped his new side defeat one of the favourites for the Kent League title, Herne Bay.

Cassius’s opening goal in the 2-1 win at Winch’s Field was a sweet strike, bending a low drive from 25-yards, which beat goalkeeper Dan Eason at his near post.

Ten minutes later, John Wilfort’s penetrating run was swept into Cassius path by his strike partner, Steve Weatherley, and Cassius comfortably rounded Eason and rolled the ball into an empty net.

Bromley have enjoyed an excellent pre-season.  Goldberg’s side have won eight of their 10 warm-up matches, including wins over Gillingham, Dagenham & Redbridge, Millwall, and kick-off their Blue Square Bet South campaign next Saturday when Dorchester Town visit Hayes Lane and Cassius wants to be apart of it.

Bromley paid Kent League side Erith Town £3,000 just over a year ago, after Cassius banged in a personal best 43 goals during the 2008-2009 campaign for Steve O’Boyle’s side.

But Cassius, who was speaking to www.kentishfootball.co.uk admitted he was left frustrated at Hayes Lane.

“I weren’t getting that many games, coming on, like the last 20 minutes, doing a bit, working hard,” he said.

“The manager didn’t see what I liked, but I just waited for the chance.  When I got my chance, I done what I done, after that I’ve been sitting on the bench but it was a good experience in Conference South.

“I hope when I finish here I can bounce back in and start getting some more games and scoring goals, like what I like doing.”

Reflecting on his Erith & Belvedere debut, it couldn’t have gone any better, as the Deres stunned last season’s runners up and Kent League Cup winners in their own back yard.

“It went well!” he said.  “I was disappointed first half, but second half we came back out and you know what, work hard, scored a brilliant goal.  I just hit it, hoping it went in.  It went in and I’m happy!  Two goals under my belt so that’s just cheered me up!

“It was a good result.  We worked hard.  Herne Bay are a good side, that’s why they finished second in the league.  They battled, played football, but our job was to come down here, grind on them, work hard and get a win, three points.”

With such a tremendous strike rate at Kent League level, Grove Park, London SE12 based Cassius, has already set himself a goalscoring target.

“I’ve set a goal target, beat it, hope I can beat it,” he said.  “If I can’t the target is I get 30 goals and see if I can get a move from then.

Cassius had this message for the Bromley boss:  “Just look what I’m doing Mark, see what I’m about and hopefully when I go back, if you give me that chance, I’ll show you what I can do on the pitch.

“Look out on the (Kentish Football) website and see what I’ve got and I hope you can move me back into Bromley.

“It depends if I get a call back.  If I don’t, then I’ll move elsewhere.”

His current manager was naturally pleased with the striker’s match winning contribution.

“Marcus is a good player, he’s been unfortunate at Bromley, where he’s not managed to feature because they’re such a strong outfit,” Micky Collins explained.

“Hopefully he’ll stay for the season.  We’ve got him on loan for the year and he’ll improve and he’ll learn and that’s why he’s here and he proved the point with two good goals.

“He’s still got things in his game that he needs to get right and hopefully with mine and other people’s help, that will happen.

“He’s a quality player.  You don’t play at Conference South level like he has unless you’ve got a bit about you -and if he was a little bit quicker he’ll probably play in the Football League.”
