Margate miss out on prolific striker Tuohy

MARGATE manager Iain O’Connell’s attempts to bring Essex based striker Martin Tuohy to Hartsdown Park has failed.

The former East Thurrock United striker, who scored 28 goals for last season’s surprise package in the Ryman Premier League, Aveley, has teamed up with his former boss, Rod Stringer, at Blue Square Bet South side Braintree Town.

Tuohy, 26, had scored 51 goals the previous season.

But O’Connell, who was speaking to www.margate-fc.com, is looking to further strengthen his attacking options.

He said: “I’m still after another striker, but I am pleased with the forward resources we already have at the club.”

He added: “I expect to bring another two players in quite soon, with probably another one later in the summer.”

One of the other players O’Connell is looking to bring into the club will be a midfielder.

Of the players at the club last season but not signed so far, the manager confirmed that defender Grant Cooper will not be with the Blues for next season.

“The travelling was a big issue for Coops,” he said.

Former Ramsgate midfielder, Sam Jones is currently in the United States but the Margate boss will be speaking to him on his return to the UK.

O’Connell also confirmed that midfielder Nick Barnes “has been offered a deal to stay at the club,” but he expects the former Tonbridge and Maidstone player to move on.

Meanwhile, the club confirmed that the petition issued in error by Revenue and Customs against Margate Football Club was this morning dismissed in the Companies Court.

The Court accepted that ALL tax owed by the Ryman Premier League club, including interest and charges had been paid in full by the last day on which it fell due.
