Martin Hayes gives eight trialists a chance to impress against Colchester
Hayes, 44, who made 102 top-flight appearances for Arsenal between 1983-1990, has revealed to www.kentishfootball.co.uk that around eight trialists will take to the field for the early Crabble clash.
“We’ve only had four training sessions, so we’ve not had a great deal of time together, but they’ve all worked hard and done what they’ve been asked to do,” said Billericay based Hayes.
“Obviously it starts tomorrow with the game and I get to see how everybody looks on the pitch, on the ball and have a look at the other boys who have been training with us and see how they shape up.”
Hayes added: “Normally I wouldn’t be looking for this type of game this early on the back of only four training sessions to play a pro-side that have probably had 20.
“It’s a bit of a tough opening, fitness wise and organisation wise.”
Hayes is looking for his players to impress him – as well as get their fitness levels up following the summer lay-off - against a side that play three league's higher.
“For us, it’s another pre-season session,” said Hayes. ”I’m sure they’re going to be a little bit rough around the edges. My main concern is I don’t want to get any sort of injuries out of it this early.
“In a way, I want them to go out and enjoy playing against pros and see the kind of levels you have to get to, to start to be successful.”
Hayes revealed that there will be a number of new faces on show against the Essex outfit.
He said: “There’s going to be lads playing for us that have been training in the four sessions and depending on how they fair in the matches determine whether we take them on.
“There’s going to probably be six, more than that, eight lades playing that have been training and depending how they look and perform will determine whether they’re going to be staying.”
