Martin Hayes unveils loan transfer of striker Jon Main

Monday 28th March 2011
MARTIN HAYES has turned to two Wombles to strengthen Dover Athletic's promotion bid by completing the double loan signings of striker Jon Main and defender Ed Harris until the end of the season, writes Justin Allen.

Main became AFC Wimbledon’s then record signing in November 2007 just days after playing and scoring against them for his previous club, Tonbridge Angels, before securing a £25,000 move to south-west London.

At Tonbridge, he bagged 52 goals in just 57 appearances, having moved there from Cray Wanderers in January 2006, prior to that he played Kent League football for VCD Athletic.

He had a spectacular 2008/09 season, scoring 33 times in the league and passing Rocky Baptiste’s previous Blue Square South record total with two months of the season still to go. Injury restricted his appearances last season but he was still the second-highest scorer, with 15 goals.

Harris, 20, signed for AFC Wimbledon in August 2010 and has made 22 appearances for the Blue Square Bet Premier side this season, predominantly at centre back.

The Dons duo go straight into the Whites line-up for the crucial Blue Square Bet South clash against Havant & Waterlooville on Tuesday night.

Delighted boss Martin Hayes told www.doverathletic.com: "I had a chat with Terry Brown about bringing in a centre-half and he's helped us out by letting us have Ed until the summer.

"Rob Gillman has picked up a knock and Olly Schulz is injured - so we were crying out for someone to help us.

"Ed is a good tackler, good header of the ball and should be a good fit here.

"Jon, of course, needs no introduction. I spoke to Terry a couple of months ago when he was on the bench at Wimbledon - so was disappointed when we saw the lad joined Dartford on loan.

"But Jon's people contacted us and asked if we were interested in him coming down.

"We're scoring goals but it's coming from one person and we can't just rely on Adam Birchall all the time.

"Jon's a proven goalscorer who can put away the other chances we're missing.

"He has experience of scoring goals at this level and perhaps can help get us into the Conference and who knows play with us next season in that division too. There is an opportunity for him.

"Adam has had a lot of weight on his shoulders and thankfully has delivered but we need someone else.

"Birchy can't score all the time, although he's doing a good job of it, and missed a couple at Staines so if someone else can step to the plate it helps big time. Perhaps that will help us win games that we haven't been."

Main scored 2 goals from 13 starts whilst on loan at Dartford.
