Matt Solly returns to Chatham Town
Monday 04th July 2011
CHATHAM TOWN reported back for pre-season training at the weekend, which saw a variety of new faces as well as some more familiar ones.Players at the Ryman League Division One North club trained within the vicinity of the Maidstone Road ground and participated in a varied fitness based activities, although they seemed relieved that the footballs came out.
All players and management staff then returned to the club for a Barbeque, where other key staff and board members were present.
“Myself and Keith (Levett, my assistant manager) had several meetings in order to plan a structured and purposeful pre-season programme,” explained manager Kevin Watson to www.chathamtownfc.net.
“Each session will have a clear focus and it’s important that the players understand where the session fits in to the medium term plan.
“The first session was always going to be reasonably light in terms of aerobic training as we plan to taper players to the required fitness levels in order to avoid injuries.
“The BBQ is a club tradition and gave perspective new players an insight to the club”.
Some extremely positive news that resulted from Saturday’s session was the signing of two Chatham Town favourites, being Matt Solly and Ryan Laker.
Despite interest from other clubs, both players have pledged their commitment to Chatham Town for the forthcoming season.
Watson said: “In order to develop the style of play that fits in with the management’s philosophy, we need players like Matt and Ryan who are comfortable on the ball as well as fit enough to play with a high intensity.
Solly re-joins the club after a spell in the Kent League with Erith & Belvedere.
Watson said: “It was important that we could attract Matt back to the club, but it was not an easy decision for Matt to return. Myself and Steve Binks personally met up with Matt prior to Saturdays session and made it clear where Matt would fit into the plans”.
Despite some interest from clubs at a considerably higher level, Laker has decided to re-sign.
“Ryan was one of few players who came out of last season with any real credit,” said Watson.
“His consistent performances were noted by all, and reflected in the two awards he picked up on the presentation evening.
“I have had several conversations with Ryan over the close season about his options, and have tried to advise him in terms of what is best for his development as a player.
“There is no doubt that Ryan will go on to play at a higher level, whether that be with Chatham Town or another club, but after cementing a first team place last season it’s difficult to then have to prove yourself again at another club”.
Chatham Town begin their pre-season campaign with a trip to Kent League side Erith Town – the current Kent Senior Trophy holders – on Saturday 23 July (3pm).
