McMahon looking to create Trophy history for Mead
Thursday 01st October 2009
THAMESMEAD TOWN boss Keith McMahon says he’s very pleased with his side’s start to their season, writes Stephen McCartney.
Speaking to www.kentishfootball.co.uk ahead of their FA Trophy preliminary round trip to Leatherhead, McMahon says it’s been a dream start for his new-look side as they go into the game sitting in the top four in the Ryman League Division One North table after eight games.
“We’re doing very well,” he said. “We had a great result against a very, very strong Leyton side, with big players like Tommy Black, who used to play for Crystal Palace and people like that playing for them.
Leyton are now managed by former Dulwich Hamlet boss Craig Edwards, who has stamped his authority on the east London club - so beating them last weekend proved to be a good outcome for McMahon and his side.
“They’ve got some very good players. Since we played them Saturday, that’s their first defeat under him,” McMahon proudly said.
“We had 20 minutes where we couldn’t get the ball off them, even though they didn’t have many chances, they were excellent, but we withstood the pressure.”
Looking forward to their trip to Leatherhead, a side that are in the bottom seven in the Ryman League Division One South table, McMahon says it’s not going to be easy.
“I’m expecting a really tight game to be fair,” he warned. “I went to watch them on Tuesday in their FA Cup replay against Lewes and I’m thinking it’s going to be a good, tough game, but we’re playing well at the moment so we’re very confident.”
“We’re looking forward to the Trophy, it’s our second game in it. We haven’t won a game in it so hopefully we can create a bit of history for the club by winning our first Trophy game.”
Reflecting on their league campaign, which has warranted five wins and a draw, McMahon said, “It’s superb. We had a little blip against Heybridge the other week, where we didn’t perform and the lads know it, but I knew we had a decent enough side and we were looking to improve on last year.
“It’s an excellent start. We didn’t think the lads would gel so quick. We know the club is punching above our weight but we’ll see where we are at Christmas. We’ve had a dream start!”
McMahon says he has no injury concerns ahead of Saturday’s trip to Surrey.
