Mehmet rekindles his love affair with Fisher Athletic

Wednesday 08th October 2008

DAVE MEHMET was unveiled as the new first team manager of Blue Square South strugglers, Fisher Athletic, on Monday.

The 47-year-old returns to the club following two stints at Bulmers Cider Kent League club Beckenham Town, where he was coach under Jason Huntley.

Mehmet brings a wealth of footballing experience to the job, having enjoyed a long and distinguished playing career.

He began his career with Millwall in the late seventies where he made a total of 133 league appearances in two separate spells.

The South Londoner made 29 appearances for Charlton Athletic and played 154 games here in Kent for Gillingham, where he is still seen as a cult hero by the Gills faithful.

In a playing career that spanned 22 years, Mehmet also turned out for a total of ten non-league clubs, including three separate spells with the Fish as a player.

The new manager signed for the club in the late eighties from Millwall and apart from a brief six month spell with Barnet, he was ever present in the side that competed in the GMV Vauxhall Conference for four years in the late eighties.

Mehmet left Fisher in 1991 following the clubs relegation to the Southern League but returned two years later for his third and final spell.

Mehmet's love of football saw him continue to turn out in County football well into his forties being the league's oldest player. As a manager, successful spells at Croydon and Beckenham in the Kent League followed a two year stint in the late nineties as the Fisher manager meaning this is now Mehmet’s FIFTH spell at the club!

Mehmet took his first training session this Monday morning and informed the players in a meeting at 9:30am of his new status as Fisher manager.

Mehmet, speaking after the Hampton game, told www.fisherathletic.co.uk: “There is obviously a lot of hard work to be done keeping this club in the division, but I’ve got a lot of affection for Fisher and aim to give it my all.”

hairman Martin Eede believes he has the right man for the job.

He said: “Dave’s a very experienced footballing man. He’s got Fisher at heart, knows he’s got a tough task to revive our fortunes and I hope everyone at the club will get behind him and back the manager 100%."

Back at Beckenham Town, a club statement on www.beckenhamtownfc.co.uk confirms the current managerial situation at Eden Park Avenue.

“Becks manager Jason Huntley stays in charge at Eden Park Avenue, where speculation surrounds the appointment of Mehmet’s successor as coach.”
