Metcalf predicts open Kent League title race
Wednesday 05th August 2009
LORDSWOOD boss Kevin Metcalf says he wants to take his side into the unknown this season, writes Stephen McCartney.
Metcalf takes his side to last season’s surprise package Holmesdale on Saturday, with the intention to cause many shocks of their own.
The Dalers were in the title race throughout last term, but in the end had to settle for a fifth placed finish in the Bulmers Cider Kent League - finishing nine points adrift of promoted champions VCD Athletic.
Lordswood, meanwhile, completed a miserable campaign, picking up six wins and three draws from their 32-matches last season, finishing second-from-bottom, seven points adrift of Beckenham Town, who endured one of their poorest season’s for many years.
Metcalf, who wrote off last season, saying he used it as preparation for this coming campaign, is setting his targets higher.
“Saturday will be tough,” the former Tunbridge Wells boss told www.kentishfootball.co.uk tonight.
“Holmesdale were one of the best teams last season, but as I’ve said, we are looking to be top six, so we will go out with this positive attitude.”
Keeping his team selection close to his chest, thus not giving Billy Hughes any indication on who will or will not be playing at Oakley Road on the opening day, Metcalf gave his opinion on this season’s leading lights.
“I’m looking forward to close competition,” he said. “I think any one of six teams could win it.
“People are talking about Faversham, but there’s Hythe, Erith & Belvedere, Erith Town, and my outside bet, Greenwich Borough.
“Sporting Bengal, who lost all of their 32-league games last season, will improve - and I’m looking for a top six - which is unknown at Lordswood.”
