Greenwich Borough’s reserve side could even walk from the club’s ground at Harrow Meadow to Metrogas’ pitch at Forty Foot Way in New Eltham, writes Stephen McCartney.Borough’s second string travel the short distance of a mile and a half to British Energy Kent County League Division One West club Metrogas for Saturday’s (1:30pm) London Intermediate Cup semi-final.
Up for grabs is a final against Corinthian Casuals or Lewisham Athletic at Imber Court, the impressive ground of Ryman League Division One South outfit, Metropolitan Police.
But Borough play a Metrogas side that have won the London Intermediate Cup for the past two seasons.
Phil Miles, Borough’s first team manager, is rooting for the club to reach the final.
He said EXCLUSIVELY to www.kentishfootball.co.uk: “Very big game at the weekend – they’re a good side, Metrogas.
“I’ve known Metrogas for years and they’ve always been a good side, always attracted players, and now they’ve moved into the Kent County League.
“I don’t think they’ve been beaten all season. The only thing possibly that could go for us is they haven’t probably played for four or five weeks.”
But the former Slade Green joint-manager warned: “But knowing Metrogas as they are, I’m sure they’ve had their friendlies and players have been ticking over.
“It will be a fantastic achievement for this football club if they could get to a final. The proudest man will be everybody.
“Everybody at this football club will be rooting for them so hopefully come Saturday night we’ll get three points (against Deal Town) and they’ll be in a cup final and we’ll have a fantastic day out.”
Borough’s leading goalscorer, at reserve team level, is 12-goal Badar Mohammed, and he was on the scoresheet in their last game, a 6-3 defeat at Dover Athletic’s Crabble Athletic ground.
According to Greenwich Borough’s programme, the final is scheduled for Saturday, 31st March.
But as last season’s Kent Senior Trophy final proved, when VCD Athletic beat Tunbridge Wells on penalties at Welling United’s Park View Road ground, cup finals played on a Sunday attract bigger crowds as fans across Kent will be able to attend the game.
