My players have confidence and belief in eachother, says Wands' assistant Joe Francis

CRAY WANDERERS are enjoying arguably their best ever season in their proud 150 year history - and assistant manager Joe Francis is keen to extend their seven-match unbeaten run when struggling Folkestone Invicta visit Hayes Lane on Saturday, writes Stephen McCartney.

The Wands go into the Kent derby sitting in their highest ever league position  - with a record of four wins and three draws from their nine games puts them in seventh place in the Ryman Premier League table.

Francis, who was speaking to www.kentishfootball.co.uk following his side’s 2-1 home win over Maidstone United in midweek, said: “We set a record in the league below of going 27 games unbeaten. We’re now seven unbeaten in the league, so we’ve got twenty to go!

“It’s all about momentum isn’t it? Football and momentum can swing both ways.  If you get into the habit of losing, like we did last year where we went through a period when we didn’t win for two months, it’s just exactly the same as winning and sometimes you need players to perform a little bit of magic and you find yourselves at the right side of a result.”

Folkestone Invicta arrive on the back of a 4-0 away defeat to AFC Hornchurch in midweek - just three days after the Essex side were thumped 7-1 at Tonbridge Angels - and Neil Cugley’s side sit second-from-bottom in the table.

“I’m looking forward to seeing Cugs because his an old mate and that will be a tough game again,” said Francis.

“I mean, they lost on Tuesday night, and they’ll want to put it right Saturday.

“Cugs has been in the game a long, long time and he knows how to get a reaction out of his teams so we’ll take nothing for granted.”

Francis felt it was too early in the season to start talking about play-off’s, but with the autumn leaves now falling from the trees, he is confident that his side will adapt to the conditions that they’ll face from now on.

“This is the next phase of the season now,” he said.  “It may require that we adapt our game.  It will require that we’ll adapt our game but what we’ve shown in these seven games including the FA Cup, if we have a set-back like going a goal behind or we get pegged back with an equaliser, we’ll go again and that is a quality of a side that has confidence and belief in each other.”
