My players have made history for Sevenoaks Town, says a proud Jones
Wednesday 24th March 2010
SEVENOAKS TOWN boss Simon Jones was overwhelmed as his club secured their place in the Bulmers Cider Kent League Cup Final for the very first time, writes Stephen McCartney.
“Rough diamond”, striker Billy Shinners, netted his 19th goal of the season to tie the scores 3-3 after extra time on the night - as Sevenoaks Town clinched victory on the away goals rule, having held Beckenham Town to a 2-2 draw at Greatness Park in the first leg.
Beckenham Town were only moments from meeting Herne Bay in the Final, to be played at Folkestone Invicta’s Cheriton Road ground, on May Day Bank Holiday, before Shinners struck just two minutes from the end of extra-time.
Jones, speaking to www.sevenoakstownfc.org, was immensely proud at the final whistle.
“Sevenoaks Town in a cup final, what a moment - remarkable and absolutely unbelievable,” he said.
“We were minutes away from losing, and then Billy steps up to score with a great finish into the bottom corner - happy days!”
He added: “The boys can feel very proud of themselves, because they have put down a marker for the club in the Kent League history books.
“We will be remembered this year, whatever happens in the final.
“Now it’s up to us to make sure we achieve our first objective, when we started out last August and finish higher than 10th in the league.”
The Kent League Cup finalists welcome Greenwich Borough to Greatness Park on Saturday.
Steve Firkins’ side - Kent Senior Trophy finalists - defeated Corinthian 3-2 last night and can join Sevenoaks on 40 points if they collect three points at the weekend.
