My priority is to win the Kent League, vows Hythe boss Scott Porter
Sunday 12th December 2010
HYTHE TOWN boss Scott Porter insists winning the Kent League is now his main priority after his side were knocked out of the FA Carlsberg Vase by Leiston on Saturday, writes Stephen McCartney.
Brendon Cass’s fourteenth goal of the season - his fifth in four games - turned out to be no more than a consolation as Leiston came away with a 3-1 Third Round win in Suffolk, courtesy of goals from Angelo Harrop, Michael Brothers and Danny Cunningham.
All attention now turns to Tuesday night’s home clash against Erith & Belvedere, as Hythe try to play catch-up, having played only nine league games.
“That’s just the situation we’ve got ourselves in, regarding the Cups, how well we done in the FA Cup,” Porter told www.kentishfootball.co.uk.
Porter’s men played seven FA Cup ties, going out in the First Round to Hereford United last month, and as a result are presently sitting in sixth place in the Kent League table - seven points behind leaders Herne Bay, who have played four games more.
But Porter is not worried and expects his side to make up lost ground in the title race.
He said: “I looked at the league table quite in detail the other night, we play a game on Tuesday against Erith & Belvedere, but we’re on the same games as most people, it’s only Herne Bay who have played more games than us and they also had a Vase game.
“Obviously with Christmas coming up we’ve got Norton and Lordswood coming up so we’ll catch up and if we pick up maximum points as well, we’ll be right up in the mix past Christmas.”
Erith & Belvedere arrive at Reachfields Stadium, with only Holmesdale, Lordswood and Sporting Bengal below them in the table, with three wins and a draw from their eight league games, so Micky Collins’ side, too, are playing catch up.
Speaking about the Deres, the Hythe boss said: “Hit and miss really with them. They’re a team that can produce good results and then sometimes they don’t turn up.
“Obviously we played them in the FA Cup (winning the Second Qualifying Round tie 4-1) and they’re looking for revenge.
“They’ve got some good players, they’re a tough side, they’re run quite professionally.
“We’ve got to pick up maximum points, we’re at home so you expect to do that, but they won’t make it easy for us, that’s for sure.”
Porter added: “We want to win the league! Simple as that! We want to get out of this league and anything else is a bonus, but the league is our priority, without a doubt.”
