My squad is good enough and capable of winning something, says VCD Athletic boss Ricky Bennett

VCD ATHLETIC boss Ricky Bennett says he is looking for a positive reaction for their Umbro Kent Senior Trophy tie at Lordswood tomorrow, writes Stephen McCartney.

The Crayford based club were dumped out of The FA Carlsberg Trophy in midweek, going down to a disappointing 2-0 defeat away to their Kent Hurlimann Football League rivals Tunbridge Wells.

Martin Larkin’s side progressed courtesy of makeshift target man Perry Spackman and man-of-the-match, left-back Lewis Mingle, while Vickers had a couple of players’ red-carded at the death, Billy Bennett and Laurence Collins.

“We’ve had a good go at them on Tuesday night,” said Bennett.

“We’ve had everything go against us over the last couple of weeks with people injured and unavailable and it’s one of those – pick yourselves up!  Don’t let it creep into your mind-set.

“Unfortunately we haven’t got a game over the Christmas and New Year for some unknown reason.  I don’t know why.  We’ve got two games before we go on a little three week break and we’ve got to bounce back, again, another side that we’ve met a lot of times this season.

“We’ve got to go to Lordswood and pick ourselves up and get back on track, back to winning.  We’ve got it in us.   Win the next two games and we’re still in everything domestically really.

“I don’t think too many of my players will feel sorry for themselves with the defeat to Tunbridge Wells.”

VCD Athletic face Lordswood sitting in fourth place in the Kent Hurlimann Football League table with 24 points from 12 game and Bennett spoke about his aims for the remainder of the season.

He said: “My aims are the same as they were at the start of the season – improvement on everything!

“We came third last year, we want to come higher than that.  We got to the quarter-finals of a cup and we want to go further than that. We’d like to get to a Cup Final.  Obviously I ‘d like to win something, definitely and I think the side, the squad is good enough and capable but get those other bits into our game, we’ve got every chance of doing something.”
