Of course we can close the gap on runaway leaders Faversham, insists Halsey

HERNE BAY manager Simon Halsey says he hasn’t given up hope catching runaway league leaders Faversham Town, writes Stephen McCartney.

Both clubs were knocked out of the FA Carlsberg Vase this week, although Faversham hold the upper hand when it comes to the Bulmers Cider Kent League title race as they are presently 12 points clear of fourth placed Bay.

“We’re back to the bread and butter of the (Kent Football) League, which is what we’re all about,” Halsey told www.kentishfootball.co.uk  after his side were dumped out of the FA Carlsberg Vase by a 40-yard looping effort from Flackwell Heath’s Mitchell Woodward

“The boys know I won’t accept anything less than what they’ve given me now, anything less than that then they won’t have a shirt to wear but I’ve told them that and they know the score.”

The former Whitstable Town assistant manager, who was promoted from assistant to manager following Barry Morgan’s departure almost two years ago, hasn’t ruled out overtaking Faversham Town to clinch the Bulmers Cider Kent League title.

“Of course we can!”, he said.  “We’ve lost to Faversham twice this year, it’s far from over!

“The belief around this club and around the changing room is we’re fourth in the league and we’re not out of it, no way, not a chance with a game in hand!”

Halsey is close to making his first signing as manager, as former Whitstable Town midfielder Jake Gess has been training with the club, following his release from their neighbouring Ryman League Division One South strugglers, and talks are ongoing at the moment.

“Jake is a player I would like to see playing for Bay,” Halsey told www.hernebayfc.net.

“He is capable of scoring some good goals and is a very good midfield provider for others.”
