Old Bromleians to honour club stalwart John Cooper by renaming their ground in his name
An amateur football club in Bromley have honoured their 90-year-old secretary by re-naming their ground in his name.
Old Bromleians have requested a home game on Saturday 3 February 2018 so they can rename their ground The John Cooper Ground to honour a club stalwart.
Old Bromleians FC will be
playing at The John Cooper
Ground in honour of their
90-year-old club stalwart.
“Broms are renaming the ground The John Cooper Ground in honour of John Cooper, who has served the club as secretary as well as bar manager and chairman and there have been other roles amongst various others since 1948,” said first team manager Danny Wakeling.
“We haven’t had an opponent named for that day but we will be at home. On that day we will unveil the new sign and officially rename the ground in John’s honour.
“It’s in recognition of a gentleman who has given such service to a club for so long.
“The club originated from Bromley Grammar (now Ravensbourne School, Hayes Lane, Bromley).
“I’m very proud of the name change as it was my proposal and thankfully it was voted through unanimously.
“There was a split on dropping the prefix Old going ahead as Bromleians FC but that was agreed once the ground name was suggested.
“We will have between 120-150 guests for the day and evening and it’s taking some genuine planning but we will make the occasion in a manner befitting a great gentleman.”
Old Bromleians won the Andreas Carter Joma Kent County League Division Two West title in Wakeling’s first season in charge of the club last season and they go into the Christmas break sitting at the top of the Division One West table with eight wins and a draw from their 11 games.
Wakeling’s men have a couple of games in hand on second-placed side Sutton Athletic Reserves, who have also collected 25 points.
