One of my challenges is to lift my players for league games, says Lisney
The Fish haven’t won a home league game all season, but have defeated Kingsbury London Tigers, Haringey Borough and Cray Wanderers at Champion Hill this season in the London Senior Cup, although the south Londoners await their first league win on home soil.
Second-from-bottom in the Bulmers Cider Kent League table with 13 points from 20 games (two points clear of Lordswood), morale was boosted last Monday when Cray Wanderers (with just one youth team player in their sixteen-man squad) were knocked out in the third round.
Ian Jenkins’ side dominated for all but five of the 120 minutes and scored two goals during extra time through Leigh Bremner and substitute George Porter, and former Fisher Athletic left-back Colin Luckett also had a penalty saved by heroic goalkeeper Adam Lisney, who made a string of fine saves during the game.
But Fisher pulled it out of the bag, scoring two dramatic late goals.
Fisher pulled a goal back, courtesy of an own-goal from Cray Wanderers skipper Mark Willy, before Fisher piled forward and Lloyd Boateng scored a dramatic late equaliser.
Jamie Lawrence, Jimmy Beauchamp, Boateng and Bryan Glover all scored from the spot as Fisher won 4-3 on penalties.
Looking ahead to Saturday’s home game against tenth placed Tunbridge Wells, Lisney told www.kentishfootball.co.uk that he wants to improve his side’s form on the Champion Hill mud.
“One of the challenges for me as a manager is try and get that sort of performance out of the players week in, week out,” said Lisney.
“It’s perhaps a little bit easier to motivate players for big Cup games when we get a few people down (to watch).
“The league is as important to us obviously and if we can get that sort of endeavour and spirit and that sort of effort out on the pitch week in, week out, we’ll be alright.
“That comes from players themselves, they’ve got to be motivated themselves to want to perform – and they do – and we’ll give it every shot on Saturday and see what we get after the game.”
Lisney added: “We haven’t won many games at home. We haven’t lost a Cup game at home yet!
“We want to win more games at home and away. We want to nick more points home and away but all I can ask is the players give me everything that they’ve got and I believe on the whole they pretty much have done that.”
