On our day we can live with the best sides in the league, says Faversham boss Ray Turner
Thursday 01st December 2011
After seeing his side achieve perhaps the result of the week when his Faversham Town side ended Maidstone United's long unbeaten League run, manager Ray Turner has now challenged his side to go on an unbeaten run themselves and propel themselves into the division’s higher reaches, writes Mike Green.
Turner said: “The performances and result that we actually achieved on Tuesday have been coming for a while - our performance in midweek I hope proved one thing; and that is that we can live with top sides in this league.
"I'm delighted the way the players recovered from what was a desperately disappointing defeat at Ramsgate last Saturday, when we definitely deserved something out of the game and showed as we’ve been showing that on our day we really can live with the best sides in this league."
Turner then paid special praise to his defensive rock. "I'm really pleased for Matt Bourne and the way he played on Tuesday," he said. "I asked him to be a leader on the pitch and that’s exactly what I got, and now I will expect that every week.
“Add to that how great it is that we've now got Danny Hockton on board as he’s got proven goalscoring pedigree at this level and as he gets fitter, I'm sure that he will give us the returns that he expects and I most definitely am hoping for."
Turner then challenged his players to use the win over the Stones to really have a positive influence on the remainder of their season. Turner said, "It’s great that the players can take on the best in the division and but they really do have to learn to win Saturday - Tuesday - Saturday just as Maidstone have gone and done.
“And you know I do seriously think that we seriously are capable of doing that and if or when we do just watch us propel up the league. We've got to have the confidence to go on and get the results that we know we can get. There’s a great opportunity that we can on a great result now and it’s up to the players to go and grab it.
“Saturday's away game at Corinthian-Casuals won’t be easy as without doubt there’s not an easy game for us home or away this season and that will still be the case when we go to Casuals on Saturday - we seem to make it difficult for ourselves as we struggle to put teams away which has been a problem.
“Every game is going to difficult and we've got to go there Saturday with that in mind wanting to try and get three points and bring them home."
Looking ahead to December when the Faversham fixture schedule is crammed to the rafters, the manager admitted, "We've got eight fixtures in the month and as such it’s a huge month for us. But as I've already said we've now got a huge opportunity to put a run together and if we can, it'll boost us no end going into the New Year and then who knows what can happen as it could really push you on in this league - we've got to grab and take the opportunity that has now presented itself to us through our hard work."
