Phoenix Sports boss Steve O'Boyle: If we play as well as we did on Saturday and Tonbridge Angels have an off day, who knows?

Monday 02nd November 2015

PHOENIX SPORTS manager Steve O’Boyle is plotting to pull off the club’s greatest ever result on Tuesday night.

The club travel to Tonbridge Angels to contest a FA Trophy First Qualifying Round Replay after coming so close to pulling off a giant-killing at home on Saturday.

Phoenix Sports, who went into the game sitting in ninth-place in the Ryman League Division One North table, were the better side and they took a lead after 30 minutes through Adem Ramadan’s fine strike following a sublime through ball from Helge Orome.

But sixth-placed Ryman Premier Leaguers Tonbridge Angels grabbed an equaliser through central defender Sonny Miles’ acrobatic overhead kick which looped into the top far corner of the net after 55 minutes.

Phoenix Sports should be looking forward to hosting Evo-Stik Southern Premier League outfit Cirencester Town on 14 November had striker Ricky Freeman buried a great chance instead of trying to walk the ball in and allowing James Folkes to clear the ball off the line.

O’Boyle said: “It’s an extra game, we don’t really need! We don’t really need that.
`
“It’s a good game to play in isn’t it? They will be a big crowd down there , against a good team and a good club, so all I’m going to do it look forward to it.

“How do I pull it off? Win on Tuesday! That’s basically it. We have to win on Tuesday, that’s basically it.

“If we play as well as we did on Saturday and they have an off day, who knows?”

Phoenix Sports’ rise has been somewhat remarkable since winning the Kent County League Division Two West title back in 2005 and this is their first ever Ryman League campaign.

Victory at Tonbridge Angels on Tuesday night will go down as the club’s greatest ever achievement.

O’Boyle said: “I’ve been in charge now, this is my fourth season. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve actually turned around and said this is the biggest game the club’s ever had!

“It seems I’m nearly saying it nearly every other week.

“It’s what we’re here for isn’t it, to play against teams like Tonbridge Angels.

“The problem is I don’t want to settle for mediocrity, midtable. I want to push on. I don’t want to be sitting down at the bottom of the league. It’s not my mentality. I want to push on and that’s what I intend to do.”
