Phoenix Sports boss Paul Bryon: We have a points and place target and we need to keep going
PHOENIX SPORTS manager Paul Bryon admits his players let down their supporters after going down to a 3-0 home defeat to neighbours VCD Athletic on Easter Monday.
The club have slipped down to tenth-place in the Bostik South Division table with 62 points in the bag and have four games left to play, starting with tomorrow’s trip to bottom-four side East Grinstead Town.
Phoenix Sports are 15 points adrift of the play-off zone since going three games without a win.
“We want to finish as high as we can and are looking for as many points as possible from our four remaining games,” said Bryon, who takes charge of his 30th game tomorrow.
“There are a few teams who can catch us with their games in hand but we will be fighting for every point and will not take things easy although we know barring a miracle play offs are out of our reach.”
“We had a mixed Easter with a difficult trip away to Hastings who are a good young side but we did well, drawing 1-1. We had a game plan stuck to it and apart from a soft pen would have come away with all three points.”
Bryon admits to feeling hurt following their crushing 3-0 derby day defeat.
“Bank holiday was probably the most disappointing game I have had since taking over. We did not turn up and looked tired,” admitted the Phoenix manager.
“It was our local derby and one for the supporters and I have to be honest we let them down badly against VCD. They wanted it more and deserved the win, no arguments.”
Attention now turns to picking themselves up against a side that are always at the wrong end of the league table.
“We now have four games and most people will think getting the team motivated maybe difficult but we have a points and place target and we need to keep going, which I know the lads will do as they are a tight group and have the ability to beat any team on their day.
“They are focused and ready to finish the season strong. Saying that it does give me a chance to look at a few from our reserves and give some minutes to some bench players. I will be looking at this but always with the objective of winning the game.”
