Players let me down, fumes Porter

Sunday 28th February 2010
DEJECTED Hythe Town boss Scott Porter is trying to pick up the pieces from his side’s failed title bid, writes Stephen McCartney.

Faversham Town moved 13 points clear of second placed Herne Bay at the top of the Bulmers Cider Kent league table with a workmanlike 2-1 win over Hythe Town.

Hythe faced a mountain to climb when captain Tom Hickman drove home Faversham’s first after 14 minutes, before Faversham keeper Rob French walked in Martin Chandler’s 40-yard curling, dipping, cross to score an own-goal.

Substitute Richard Sinden rubbed in the salt into the wounds of his former club by scoring early in the second half to virtually end Hythe’s promotion push.

“We just didn’t do the basics and everyone’s let me down,” fumed Porter, when speaking to www.kentishfootball.co.uk yesterday.

Even if Hythe win their five games in hand on the Lilywhites, they will still be seven points adrift of Faversham.

They must slot 14 more league games into the last eight weeks of the season, starting at Sevenoaks Town on Tuesday night.

“Games are coming thick and fast because of the fixture pile-up but we’ve got to get on with it,” said Porter.

“I’m not a great loser, I hate losing and we’ve got to go and pick ourselves back up and go again on Tuesday.”

Porter couldn’t put his finger on yesterday’s disappointing display in front of a bumper 327 crowd at Salters Lane.

“I don’t know!” he said.  “We’ve got a good enough squad in there, big players, experienced players and they didn’t come to the table.

“They froze on the stage where it’s the most important game of the season and it’s frustrating because I can’t get my head around it.

“We can sit in the dressing room banging our heads against the walls and they probably won’t know - but that’s football.”
