Returning Wes Foderingham gets the nod at Bromley
Sunday 22nd August 2010
BROMLEY assistant manager Hayden Bird has explained why the club has changed their goalkeeper so early in the season, writes Stephen McCartney.
The Lillywhites confirmed on Friday that Wes Foderingham has returned to Hayes Lane on a two-month loan deal from local Npower Championship outfit Crystal Palace, after the Eagles snapped up the 19-year-old from the Blue Square Bet South club on a two-year contract earlier in the week.
Former Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Jamie Butler, 18, kept goal for the club’s opening two games, saving a penalty in the 2-1 opening day win over Dorchester Town, and helping Bromley to a convincing 4-2 win away to Boreham Wood, where former Bromley goalkeeper Gareth Williams had a game to forget.
But Butler has now signed for the Hertfordshire outfit, as Bromley handed Foderingham his second debut for the club at Hampton & Richmond Borough yesterday.
Striker Paul Vines opened the scoring on the stroke of half-time, converting a cross from Tony Finn, before the home side levelled through Dave Tarpey, who later had a penalty saved by Foderingham after Jerrome Sobers, who scored a last-gasp header to clinch the win, handled in the box.
Bromley are presently in second place in the Blue Square Bet South table with maximum points from their opening three games and welcome bookies favourites Havant & Waterlooville to Hayes Lane on Tuesday night.
Bird, who was talking to www.bromleyfc.tv, is delighted to welcome back the former England under 19 stopper.
“We are delighted to sign Wes, but at the same time, I’m personally very sorry to lose Jamie,” explained Bird.
“We have been talking to Wes and his agent since the end of last season. More recently, we have been in conversation with Phil Alexander (chief executive) at Crystal Palace over a loan move.
"Due to restrictions imposed on Palace as a result of their takeover, the deal has been very complicated. At one stage it looked as though Wes would not be joining us at all and therefore, with Craig (Holloway) injured we pushed on and signed Jamie.
“However, Wes signed a two year deal with Crystal Palace this week and part of his agreement brings him to Hayes Lane on loan. Initially, the deal is for two months, but if all parties are happy, we have already agreed that the signing will become a long term loan. Wes is an excellent goalkeeper and we are delighted to have him back.
"Very unfortunately, Jamie has left us and is about to sign for Boreham Wood. I must admit to being really disappointed to have lost him. At only 18, he is a young goalkeeper with outstanding potential. We were all impressed with him and wanted him to stay.
“With Craig Holloway (who arrived from Blue Square Bet South side Braintree Town in the summer) sustaining a long term injury, I would have loved the ideal scenario of Wes and Jamie fighting for the shirt, but we fully understand Jamie wants to further his career by playing every week.
“Therefore, with Boreham Wood contacting Mark (Goldberg) after Tuesday to confirm their interest, Mark had a chat with Jamie who decided to pursue his Blue Square Bet South career at Meadow Park.
“ On behalf of everyone at Bromley, I would like to thank him and wish him every success. He’s a great lad.”
Havant & Waterlooville arrive at Hayes Lane on the back of an opening day draw at Dartford, followed by a home draw to Weston-super-Mare two days later and then goals from Loui Fazerkerly, Jack Parkinson and player-boss Jamie Day saw Welling United come away from Westleigh Park with an impressive 3-1 win, proving that bookmakers know nothing about non-league football.
Meanwhile, striker, Marcus Cassius, 20, who is on loan at Kent League side Erith & Belvedere, is certainly enjoying life at Park View Road, as he has scored all of the Deres’ goals so far this season and leads the goalscoring charts with 5 goals.
