Tony Russell unveiled as Cray Wanderers' new boss

VCD ATHLETIC begin the search for a new management team after Tony Russell and Ray Powell quit the club to replace Tommy Warrilow at Cray Wanderers.

 

The pair quit the Crayford outfit only nine days after keeping the club in the Ryman Premier League by winning their last six games.

Russell, 36, and Powell ensured the club finished in eighteenth-place in the club’s first season at that level, collecting 53 points from their 46 league games, five points clear of the relegation zone.

Warrilow’s remit was to maintain Cray Wanderers’ Ryman League Division One North status and he pulled off The Great Escape by winning a club record ten games to finish their campaign in sixteenth-place with 52 points, finishing seven points clear of the relegation zone.

Warrilow and his assistant Alex O’Brien left Hayes Lane quietly after their last game of the season.

VCD Athletic have issued the following statement to reveal that Russell will be dropping down a division to manage a club that he used to play for.

“Following a meeting between club chairman Gary Rump and manager Tony Russell it is with regret we have to announce the departure of Tony Russell and assistant Ray Powell with immediate affect who will be taking up the managerial role at Cray Wanderers.

“During Tony’s nineteen months at the club he has taken the club from the Kent League to winning the Ryman North and into the Ryman Premier for which the club is very grateful and with both Tony and Ray every success for the future.

“Any further statements re the managerial position at the club will be made.”
