Safety concerns cause postponement of relegation battle

Wednesday 10th February 2010
HEAVY snowfalls since 4 o’clock forced the postponement of tonight’s Ryman League Division One South six-pointer between Ashford Town and Whitstable Town, writes Stephen McCartney.
.

News that the match had been postponed had filtered through at a quarter-past-five this afternoon.

Tenants Maidstone United played at the ground last night, losing 3-0 to Hendon, but the landlords felt the ground would be fit to host tonight’s crucial Kent derby, between two sides in the bottom three.

But snow started falling in the Kingsnorth area after 4 o’clock and the club decided it was the safer option to postpone the match.

A club spokesman said: “There has been a lot of harder snow fall (since 4 o’clock).  The pitch was in fine condition earlier so no inspection was planned, but the recent heavier falls have made the roads treacherous around the ground and as a result we have had to call the game off.”
