Schulz and Elmes will score 30-goals between them, predicts Miles - EXCLUSIVE

Monday 06th August 2007

Chatham Town boss Phil Miles has unveiled the signing of striker, Gavin Schulz from Ramsgate, writes Stephen McCartney.

Ramsgate resident Schulz, impressed Miles during his loan period at Maidstone Road last season, and the manager swooped to sign up the striker in time for their Ryman League Division One South campaign.

And having signed another striker, Dominic Elmes, from Dartford earlier, Miles has high hopes for the pair.

“I’m pleased with the pair of them,” Miles said EXCLUSIVELY to www.kentishfootball.co.uk, tonight. “If they get fifteen goals each, that will please me. If they get more, that’s a bonus.”

He added: “We’ve still got Darren Smith chipping in from midfield, so hopefully, we’ll be allright as well.”

Miles explained what attributes Schulz will bring the side.

“He was on loan to us from Ramsgate, but he’s come permanently now,” he said.

“He’s scored twice for us in pre-season, I’m really pleased that he’s come and signed for us.

“His work-rate is fantastic, enthusiasm, he’s strength up front, and he’s got an eye for goal. He scored Saturday and took his goal really well.”

Chatham continue their pre-season programme with a home game against Ryman League Division One North outfit, Waltham Abbey on Tuesday night.

“It will be another good test for us,” admitted Miles. “I don’t know too much about them to be honest, they’re in the northern section of the Ryman’s, so they will be a strong side.

“They’re only the same as us, what, ten days away from the season starting, so it should be another good test for us.”

Chatham Town begin their Ryman League Division One South campaign with a trip to Corinthian-Casuals on Saturday, 18th August, followed by a mouth-watering home clash against Kent rivals, Ashford Town, three days later.

And on his first-day squad, Miles said: “I’ve got something in my mind, but obviously things can change between now and then.

“At the moment, the squad that I’ve had with me for the last couple of games, will pretty much be the squad that I’m looking to take into the first game.

“I don’t know if they’ve changed any players around this year, but when we played them at home the last time, over Christmas, we drew 2-2, but we were 2-0 down.

“In that league, it doesn’t matter if they’re bottom or top. On their day anyone can beat anybody, as we proved on a few occasions.

“We’ll go there first day of the season, it’s always a bit cagey. I know we will be ready.”

Without full-back, Tom Binks (whose recovering from his pelvis operation), and winger/striker, Mark Brooks, whose broken his hand, Miles is giving a couple of trialists their last chance to impress.

“I’ve got a couple of trialists that I’m still not sure about,” he said. “They’re both involved tomorrow, so I’ll make a decision then.”

Miles expects Binks will be out “for 4-6 weeks,”, whilst Brooks’ plaster will be coming off in a couple of weeks, when he’ll re-start training.

“I’m still looking to add to the squad over the next couple of weeks,” revealed Miles.

“If things come off, all well and good, if they don’t, then I’ll go with what I’ve got.

“It’s pretty much the same squad that I had last year.”
