Scoring is a big problem for us, admits Lewisham Borough boss Darrell Queeley

LEWISHAM BOROUGH manager Darrell Queeley says he has been impressed with rival Kent Invicta League sides this season, writes Stephen McCartney.

The Ladywell Arena outfit sprung a shock 2-1 win over Kent Hurlimann Football League side Erith Town in the Third Round of the London Senior Cup (Sponsored by Coventry Scaffolding) on Monday night.

They took a fourteenth minute lead through a controversial goal from Victor Lojtede, a striker who was playing reserve team football for Erith Town only three weeks’ ago, before Erith Town levelled through James Hawkins inside the opening two minutes of the second half.

But winger Dominic Weston, 22, converted a 53rd minute penalty for his sixth goal of the season to seal a trip to Corinthian-Casuals in the Fourth Round on 26 November.

Queeley, 32, admitted goalscoring has been a problem so far this season, having seen his side score only 19 goals in 16 league and cup games this season.

“It’s a big problem for us,” he said.  “Victor’s come in and he’s played two games and he’s scored two goals.  He’s come from Erith Town’s reserves so he looks a superb quick outlet.

“We’ve not scored enough goals.  We’re creating chances.  The majority of those games we’ve had the most possession but we’re not converting that into goals.

“I can’t say we’ve been unlucky, we haven’t been good enough so we just have to improve on that and hopefully we start moving up the table.  That’s what we’re hoping.”

Lewisham Borough lie in tenth place in the Kent Invicta League table with 15 points from 12 games and Queeley hopes his side begin to climb the table, especially as they are 15 points behind unbeaten league leaders Bly Spartans.

He said:  “We haven’t had the best of times in the league. We’ve had a lot of injuries, a lot of people out.  Hopefully this (win over Erith Town) will spur the boys on to start picking up and getting points again.”

Lewisham Borough travel to Cray Wanderers’ former abode, Oxford Road to play fifth-placed Seven Acre & Sidcup on Saturday, followed by a home clash against fifth-placed side Phoenix Sports on 26 November.

When asked about the teams that his side have faced in the new Step Six league in Kent, Queeley said: “I’ve been very impressed, very impressed.  There’s a lot of very, very good sides in it.  A lot of sides have come into it and set themselves up really well.

“It’s been tough, week in, week out it’s been a tough game with different teams imposing different threats so yes it’s very tough.”
