Scott Porter resigns after disagreement over next seasons playing budget

Tuesday 06th May 2014
HYTHE TOWN have confirmed that manager Scott Porter has resigned tonight after failing to agree a playing budget with the board for next season.

Porter ended a successful five-year reign at Reachfields Stadium, finishing this season in the top eight of the Ryman League Division One South with 73 points from 46 points, just missing out on the play-offs by six points.

Director and secretary Martin Giles issued a statement on the club’s website at around ten o’clock on Tuesday night.

He said: “Last season, in common with many other clubs we had to reduce our playing budget in mid-season which is something we have never had to do before.

“We had experienced an overall drop in sponsorship and were then hit with the extremely wet weather which affected our cash flow and lead to midweek games and consequent reduced attendances.

“Whilst we hope that things will improve or that we will enjoy good cup runs we cannot rely on that happening and must set a realistic figure that we know we can maintain throughout the season. It is still ahead of many others but it was not something that Scott could accept.”

Mr Giles reflected on Porter’s successful career at Reachfields Stadium.

“During Scott’s five seasons as manager Hythe Town FC has gained promotion to the Ryman League, won the Kent Senior Cup and become the first Kent League Club to reach the First Round Proper of the FA Cup for 53 years, meeting Hereford United, then in the Football League.

“Scott never finished lower than 8th in the Ryman South League and reached the play-offs in our second year in the league.

“We thank Scott for all he has done for the club and wish him well in the future”.

The club expect a lot of interest in the vacancy.  Applications can be made by email: apply@hythetownfc.co.uk  or by calling the club secretary (Mr Giles) on 01303 265 962 up to and including the 11th May.

The club hope to interview and appoint within 10 days of that date.

Meanwhile, Erith & Belvedere have confirmed that they will appoint their new manager at 09:30 on Wednesday morning.

The Park View Road club suffered a miserable first season in the Ryman League finishing bottom of the Division One North table with 22 points (6 wins and 4 draws) from their 46 games.

Matt Longhurst, 33, who resigned as the manager of Corinthian after losing 2-0 to Beckenham Town in their Macron Southern Counties East Football League Challenge Cup Final on Bank Holiday Monday, has been linked with the Erith & Belvedere job.
