Seager hits back at fans' abuse

Sunday 18th January 2009

WHITSTABLE TOWN manager Marc Seager has hit-back at his club's followers - after they turned on his players following yesterday’s 1-0 defeat at Folkestone Invicta, writes Stephen McCartney.

The Oystermen have slumped into the Ryman League Division One South relegation zone, following their 16th league defeat of the season.

Seager, speaking to www.whitstabletownfc.co.uk, has hit out at supporters that were getting on his players’ backs, especially as they need backing to maintain their Ryman League status.

“I can take the flack, it goes with the job as manager at any level in football, but what I can’t get my head round is a few, and it is a minority of “so called Whitstable supporters”, who have taken to hurling personal abuse at their own players,” Seager fumed.

“These are the very same players’ who they cheer and applaud, as they did when we beat Chipstead 5-1, yet despite a good solid performance against a good Folkestone side.

“Yes, it was a defeat, but the players gave their all, but this minority still choose to verbally abuse their own team players’ as they warm down after the game.

“My players are disgusted at such treatment and feel very hurt by a mindless minority and it’s something that I never experienced as a player and it’s not acceptable, as simple as that.

“If there is a repetition I shall be asking the club to ban the offenders from the Belmont, after all if this had happened in the street police would have taken action and rightly so.

“Don’t think I am unaware of the strength of feeling that is surrounding our current position, I am no fool; but to make it personal is totally out of order.

“Yet no one has the guts to talk to me face to face after the game. I have always said I will stand by my decisions on the pitch, and that goes for my players as well.

“Hopefully common sense will prevail and we can draw a line under this and concentrate on getting out of the bottom half of the table and move on from there.”

Whitstable Town travel to Croydon Athletic on Tuesday night, a side unbeaten for seven league games.
