Seager pays tribute to his best man at Whitstable

Sunday 03rd February 2008

STRIKER Steve Marshall has decided to quit Whitstable Town - due to increased family and work commitments.

Boss Marc Seager, whose side eased their relegation worries with a 2-0 home win over fellow strugglers Horsham YMCA yesterday, paid tribute to Marshall despite being told the bombshell of the  departure last Tuesday.

“Let me just say what fantastic a signing Marshy has been for this football club,” Seager told www.whitstabletownfc.co.uk.

“He will go down as one of the best players to pull on the red shirt of Whitstable Town for many a year.

“Yes, I am disappointed as Steve will not be around the club anymore, everyone knows we are good mates.

“I was best man at his wedding to Michelle and honoured that he asked me, both our families get on well so as well as a wrench football wise, it’s a blow personally.

“On his day, and let’s not forget Steve has won just about everything in the non-league game, no defender could live with him.

“I respect his decision to leave the club, but if it were down to me then he would still be in the side facing Horsham YM, but Marshy has made up his mind and I just want to say, thanks for the memories mate and don’t be a stranger at The Belmont.”

Marshall, who played in the same Deal Town with Seager, which won the FA Vase at Wembley Stadium in May 2000, added: “Whitstable has been one of the highlights of my football career. To play with Marc as a player then as a manager has been a wonderful experience.

"It’s not a case of jumping ship by any means. My family situation and often I have struggled through work to get to training. I shall be taking some time out to re-evaluate my situation and look back on my time at Whitstable with some great memories.”

Despite Marshall's shock departure, the Oystermen moved six points clear of the drop zone thanks to goalkeeper Kevin Fewell yesterday.

Although striker Ian Pulman scored the two goals, Fewell was the rock on which it was built.

Horsham YMCA had enough chances to get on the score sheet during the 90 minutes but each time they were thwarted by the solid figure of Fewell.  It was only his third clean sheet of the season.
