SEVENOAKS TOWN manager Micky Collins has paid tribute to captain Tom Ripley, who announced his retirement from the game on Friday.

 

“It’s a hard decision when it comes but it’s time for me to hang the boots up,” said Ripley, 33.

“I can’t thank Micky Collins enough for the last seven years. I’ve met some of the best people and being club captain is the proudest moment of my career and I’ll be along as a fan for life.”

Collins also took to Twitter to pay tribute to his departing centre-half.

“Sometimes as a manager, a person comes along that not only becomes a great fried but exceeds every route you want from a player,” said Collins.

“That’s Rips in a nutshell, dedicated, a leader, a winner, brave as a lion, a fantastic team-mate and also a great player. Add to that an absolute gentleman off the pitch.

“I’m honoured that you played for me all those years, you will be sorely missed in and around the ground.

“We as a club will make sure you get a fitting farewell to recognise your great service.  Enjoy retirement, you deserve it.”

A club statement added: “Tom you have been a leader and a gentleman on and off the pitch from the very first day you signed for us.

“You have inspired many of our youth players with your dedication and leadership qualities. 

“It has been a privilege to see you lead the team out week after week.”

The Oaks lost 4-2 to Isthmian League Northern Division side Brentwood Town yesterday and step-up their pre-season preparations on Wednesday night when Isthmian Premier Division side Lewes visit Greatness Park.

Sevenoaks Town kick-off their Isthmian League South East Division campaign with a trip to Whitstable Town on Saturday 14 August 2021.
