Sevenoaks Town boss Keith Levett gunning for top half finish

Friday 28th January 2011
SEVENOAKS TOWN manager Keith Levett says his opposite number Ricky Bennett is doing a good job in his first season in charge of VCD Athletic, writes Stephen McCartney.

Bennett guided the Crayford based club to the semi-finals of the Kent League Cup, after seeing off Erith & Belvedere 3-1 on aggregate after Lewis Wood and Daryl Wheeler scored in the second half at Park View Road in midweek.

Vickers are in third place in the Kent League table with 25 points from 12 games, 7 points behind leaders Herne Bay, with three games in hand.

Sevenoaks Town, meanwhile, arrive at Oakwood sitting in eighth place with 19 points from 13 games and Levett is looking forward to an entertaining game and ultimately a top-half finish in his first season in charge of the Greatness Park club.

“We played them earlier in the season and felt we put in an ok performance without creating too many scoring opportunities,” recalled Levett.

“We could and probably should have perhaps come away with a draw at the end with Adam Marsh going close.

“I thought at the time that VCD were the best footballing team we had played and having played all the other sides in our league I still feel the same. I think Ricky Bennett has done a great job starting again with a new group of players.”

Bennett took charge of the club following the controversial decision to relegate the club due to ground grading issues after one season in the Ryman League, where Paul Foley guided the club to eighth place in the Northern Division.

“As a club VCD have been extremely unlucky to have had such a good season the year before and then find themselves being relegated,” said Levett.

“However, while we will respect VCD we must also try to impose ourselves on them from the start and put in another positive performance. If we work hard and perform to our capability we have a good chance to get something from the game.

“As I see the league, any team that can win three or four games on the spin can find themselves near the top. We need make sure we put in consistent performances if we want to finish in the top half of the table. That's something we will be asking the players for going forward for the remainder of the season.”

Meanwhile, elsewhere, Beckenham Town have withdrawn their reserve side from the Kent League Division One with immediate effect.

Becks secretary Peter Palmer told www.beckenhamtownfc.co.uk: “It is simply no longer financially viable for us to run a reserve team.  We do, however, very much regret having to take this action during the season.”

Beckenham Town are one of a number of Kent League club’s that do not pay their first team players.
